John Bui graduated from Spring Valley High School with honors in 2010. In the fall of that year, he enrolled at UNLV to pursue a degree in biochemistry. He soon became a participant in the UNLV TRIO Student Support Services- Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math program (SSS-STEM), where he received tutoring, mentoring and academic counseling. As an undergraduate student, he volunteered his time with many organizations including Ronald McDonald House Charities, Heaven Can Wait Animal Sanctuary, and Opportunity Village, in addition to mentoring and tutoring students at GEAR UP high schools. John was also an active member of the nationally recognized health preprofessional honor society, Alpha Epsilon Delta.
John’s passion for the sciences lead to him being awarded with a “Rebel Achievement Scholarship” and the “Professor MN Jan Chemistry Scholarship”, both merit-based scholarships. John also qualified for the Governor Guinn Millennium Scholarship, Wells Fargo Scholarship, and SSS grant-in-aid. John states: “As a lowincome and first-generation student, college was financially challenging. Student Support Services helped me get to where I am today. I am very grateful to have been a recipient of the Wells Fargo Scholarship and grant-in-aid throughout my undergraduate academic career. Being employed as a tutor not only helped me financially, but also allowed me to become a mentor for other participants in the program.”
John’s interest in the field of dental medicine grew while shadowing a dental professional. He has gained experience of office procedures, terminology, work related activities, and the opportunity to achieve a solid understanding of what is involved in the practice of dentistry. In 2014, John graduated from UNLV with a bachelor of science degree in biochemistry with a 3.56 GPA. He was accepted in to the UNLV School of Dental Medicine for the 2014 fall semester. John plans to open a dental practice where he can promote the importance of maintaining good dental hygiene and overall health.
