UNLV The Center Awarded Second Title III (MSI) Grant

News | September 2016 | by Dr. William Sullivan, Associate Vice President for Retention & Outreach and Executive Director

Keith and I have outstanding news to share! The results of the FY2016 Title III Asian American Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions (AANAPISI) Program competition have just been announced, and we are pleased to report that the AANAPISI proposal submitted by the Center for Academic Enrichment and Outreach at UNLV was selected for funding. Thus, for the next five years (i.e., 2016-17 to 2020-21), The Center will be home to another Title III AANAPISI project. This new AANAPISI project annually serves 180 UNLV undergraduates, of whom:

  • At least 50% will be Asian-American or Native American Pacific Islander (AANAPISI) students;
  • No less than 67% will be low-income individuals;
  • All will be STEM undergraduates (i.e., students majoring, minoring, or pursuing a professional certification in science [including mathematical, information, and health sciences], engineering, or in mathematics or science education); and
  • All will be students who are at risk of educational failure or otherwise in need of special assistance and support.

All AANAPISI project participants will receive services based on their need for academic support in order to persist in their degree programs, earn postsecondary credentials, and enroll in postbaccalaureate studies. AANAPISI project services will include:

  • Tutoring;
  • Counseling (i.e., academic; undergraduate financial-aid; career; and graduate/professional-school admissions and financial-aid), delivered by academic coaches who are STEM graduate students at UNLV;
  • Support for undergraduate research (student and faculty stipends for research and conferences;
  • Access to a textbook and academic-productivity-device lending library;
  • Difference-education interventions; and
  • Frequent, ongoing academic-progress monitoring.

Thanks to the team who worked tirelessly to develop the best possible AANAPISI proposal. Your efforts have produced another institutional milestone: the awarding of UNLV's second Title III (MSI) grant.
