Over seven hundred students from nine GEAR UP middle schools were invited to the Mountain West Conference Women’s Basketball Championship Game on March 11, 2016 at the Thomas and Mack Center. Over sixty staff members from GEAR UP, Educational Talent Search, Administration, tutors and Upward Bound students were on hand to assist as chaperones for this event.
This day was designed to be a college experience tour, with exposure to a college campus and a sporting event. Students first enjoyed a brief tour of the UNLV campus before having a picnic lunch from Firehouse Subs. Students had the opportunity to meet and mingle with peers from other GEAR UP schools; participating in dancing and games.
After lunch, students and staff walked to the Thomas and Mack Center for the championship game. Students were encouraged to design signs, paint their faces and wear their school colors for the event. Everyone had a great time singing, dancing and cheering for the teams in this final game. Students were invited on to the basketball court once the championship team was declared and sang along with them to “We Are the Champions.” Members from the championship team, mascots and cheerleaders stayed on the court to take photos and sign autographs.
We had a wonderful opportunity to have a day for our GEAR UP students that showcased a “full campus experience” rather than just a simple college campus tour. The Center for Academic Enrichment and Outreach thanks the Mountain West Conference for the complimentary tickets to the game and helping make this day possible.
