UNLV GEAR UP, in collaboration with William H. Bailey Middle School counselors, celebrated student accomplishments throughout the 2015-2016 academic year, as a way of motivating students to strive for success on their path to higher education.

Multiple recognition events spanned over two weeks to celebrate the different groups of achievers. Each recognition celebration included a certificate ceremony, lunch, and a raffle drawing for free meals, movie tickets, and grand prizes, including bicycles and tablets. Twelve students were recognized for earning straight A’s, over one hundred students received Honor Roll, and one hundred thirty-eight were recognized for improving their overall GPA by 0.5 or higher.

On May 24, 2016, Anthony Herrera, College of Southern Nevada (CSN) recruiter, presented to three hundred and fifty seventh graders about the importance of a college education, and filling out the FAFSA, as well as gave an introduction to the types of financial aid available, such as grants, scholarships, and loans. Students were then given the opportunity to ask questions they had related to college admissions and financial aid. This event helped students realize that there are numerous resources available to make a college education more attainable.
