GEAR UP 2015 Achievers

Jacob Chivara

Jacob Chavira, an eighth-grade student at John C. Fremont Middle School, has been actively involved in the UNLV GEAR UP program since the sixth grade. Over the past two years, he has been friendly, courteous, helpful, and polite to both his elders and his peers. He has participated in numerous GEAR UP activities, including campus tours, after-school programs, workshops, lunch time tutoring, and the summer enrichment program. Jacob has been a model student and advocate for GEAR UP through his daily interactions with peers, often helping to recruit students to participate in various GEAR UP activities.

Academically, Jacob has made significant progress. He ended the sixth grade with a 2.4 GPA, but continuously improved his grades with the help of lunch time and inclass tutoring, as well as after-school programming. His participation in after-school classes, such as Math Counts and SuccessMaker, have enhanced his math skills; he maintained a C average during sixth grade, and now maintains a B average in prealgebra. Jacob ended the fall 2014 semester with an impressive 3.67 GPA.

Postsecondary education is a top priority for Jacob. Eager to learn about college enrollment and scholarships, he actively participates in the UNLV and Nevada State College campus tours asking questions throughout the tour. Jacob is interested in art and has been researching different career opportunities in the field. Jacob is a strong advocate for GEAR UP and looks forward to participating in the program at the high school level. The GEAR UP team is proud of Jacob’s accomplishments over the past two years and excited to watch him succeed in his postsecondary endeavors.

Jeremiah Williams

Jeremiah Williams is a charismatic, caring, motivated student who serves as an example that if you work hard and persevere, anything is possible. Jeremiah has been a part of UNLV GEAR UP since sixth grade at KO Knudson Middle School, where he actively participated in the GEAR UP after-school program, yearly summer camps, and volunteered as a peer tutor. With the assistance of the UNLV GEAR UP program, Jeremiah was able to maintain a 3.8 GPA, earn college credit as a middle school student in the UNLV SAGE Academy summer program, and was honored to receive a scholarship to attend the Phillips Exeter Elite Boys Summer Academy in New Hampshire, MS.

With his skills and the various support he received during middle school, Jeremiah was accepted into Valley High School’s Inter-Baccalaureate (IB) Program. Jeremiah has continued his participation with UNLV GEAR UP at Valley HS, and through the encouragement and positive support he received from the GEAR UP staff, Jeremiah has excelled academically, as well as in extracurricular activities. As an IB student in an above average rigorous curriculum, he has maintained a high grade point average. In addition, Jeremiah has excelled in running track (110 high hurdles, long jump and the 200 meter dash), playing on the basketball and tennis teams, as well as participating in Key Club, Boys Hip Hop, and National Honor Society. He is also a part of the Alpha Men and Divas of Tomorrow group. Jeremiah constantly tells the UNLV GEAR UP staff that he stays busy so that he will be a top candidate to receive college scholarship, with Georgetown University being one of his top choices.

Jeremiah is a student who works hard to achieve his goals and is excited about the opportunities postsecondary education brings. Jeremiah will continue to excel academically, athletically and personally. He is a great example of the UNLV GEAR UP program and deserves all the success that life can offer.
