Candi Shawn Jefferson
Candi Shawn Jefferson had one goal in mind; she wanted to return to college, but as a single mother there were many financial and personal barriers in the way. The Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority’s Family Self-Sufficiency program learned of Candi’s desire to pursue an associates degree and referred her to the TRiO Educational Opportunity Center, known locally as Educational Opportunity Center Adult Services (EOC) at the UNLV Center for Academic Enrichment and Outreach.
In March 2007, Candi met with an AES counselor to discuss her goals and aspirations in addition to receiving financial aid counseling and an overview of the college enrollment process. Soon after meeting with her AES counselor, Candi decided to enroll at the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) to study sociology and paralegal studies. Compelled to further her education, Candi called upon her AES counselor to discuss transferring from CSN to UNLV. She knew she wanted a career in a helping profession but was unsure of the appropriate area of the study. Candi’s sincere interest to help, serve and teach others led her to pursue a degree in human services counseling in the fall of 2011 at UNLV.
Extending her goal of obtaining an associates degree, Candi graduated in the spring of 2014 with a bachelor of arts degree in human service counseling and minor in family studies with a 3.81 GPA. Candi is now a graduate student in the UNLV clinical mental health counseling program. She aims to graduate with her masters degree in 2017. She states: “the TRiO Adult Educational Services program has assisted in my successful return to college. They assessed my interests, provided information on the college enrollment process, the importance of meeting with an advisor, and how to fill out the FASFA. My AES counselor has been a positive role model for me. I still keep in touch with AES staff and utilize TRiO services, as they have been instrumental to my higher education journey.”
