The first step in getting financial aid for college is filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The federal government uses this information to award federal aid in the form of grants, work-study, and loans. Colleges also use the data from the FAFSA to award institutional financial aid and it is very important that you fill out the FAFSA as early as possible, financial aid is awarded on a “first come, first serve” basis so missing a deadline can cost you a lot of money.

Scholarship can be obtained from many local, state, and national organizations. Be sure to contact each agency at least one year prior to your year of enrollment. Many deadlines fall between October and March. It is also wise to contact the institution you would like to attend to inquire about scholarship opportunities at their particular institution. Please remember that Scholarships are considered “Free Money” and you should not have to pay an outside agency to find this money for you.
